<![CDATA[Buskers melt in 117° desert heatwave]]> http://buskercentral.com/buskers/blog.php?u=2&b=140&sid=de9a61eb5ab7e53a98525f8f1ef22466 2013-07-02T06:05:44+00:00 2013-07-02T06:05:44+00:00 (LAS VEGAS) Let's take a trip down the Strip in Las Vegas and see how the buskers are melting. No, it's not that kind of trip. This is for reals.

It's never been hotter in Sin City which just tied an all time record of 117 (47.2 C) degrees in June. Regular street-performers seem to be gravitating towards the Fremont Street Experience where it's a tad cooler. But anyone in an enclosure or costume almost has to have a whole thermos of cold water with them.

Cupid has the right idea. This short, chubby busker runs around in his wings sporting a white g-string. Mix in a few drunks and it makes for a good time - assuming you drink. This is, after all, Las Vegas - home to over 400 Elvis'.

Off to the left is a Golden Statue, to the right is Gold Man. In the center is Golden Girl. Down the way is Sponge Bob...

<![CDATA[Ocean City's boardwalk to limit pitches]]> http://buskercentral.com/buskers/blog.php?u=2&b=44&sid=de9a61eb5ab7e53a98525f8f1ef22466 2009-05-21T03:56:31+00:00 2009-05-21T03:56:31+00:00 Ocean City, Maryland city council passed a resolution limiting it's boardwalk buskers and street performers to two pitches "so everybody can co-exist a little bit better", said Mayor Rick Meehan. The performers lobbied against the the ordinance which would keep them away from store-fronts and benches.

In a written statement that was evidently read to the council, "If it is the intention of the council to eliminate street performing, then I urge them to pass this new ordinance", said busker Alexander Osborn whose reverse-psychology probably didn't help.

The law was passed unanimously by council members. The boardwalk is a well-known beach hangout and visited by over 2.4 million tourists a year. The performers were successful in making one change, however. They can...

<![CDATA[Just what exactly is a busker?]]> http://buskercentral.com/buskers/blog.php?u=2&b=238&sid=de9a61eb5ab7e53a98525f8f1ef22466 2020-04-01T05:22:23+00:00 2020-04-01T05:22:23+00:00 (WWW) It's interesting to see what websites come up with their definition of a busker. One such site is the editable Wikipedia.org informing readers since 2001.
buskers-1928.jpg
The word "wiki" is Hawaiian for "quick". The definition of 'busker' redirects to the 'street performance' page started in 2003 which has been edited, believe-it-or-not, over a thousand times.

"Street performance or busking is the act of performing in public places for gratuities."

Besides the basic definition, the page also covers etymology, history, forms, collecting money, pitches, legislation, and notable performers. The latter is filled with famous and not-so-famous artists including George Michael, the Violent Femmes, and even Benjamin Franklin.

Early editing was done by the Wiki editors themselves...

<![CDATA[Film: "Exit Through The Gift Shop" has it's moments]]> http://buskercentral.com/buskers/blog.php?u=2&b=82&sid=de9a61eb5ab7e53a98525f8f1ef22466 2010-06-07T03:42:27+00:00 2010-06-07T03:42:27+00:00 (BOULDER) Exit Through the Gift Shop is a film by Banksy who dares not reveal his face. He's a wanted man for destroying BT property all in the name of streetart

The film involves 5 street artists that have discovered Kinko's copy shop can print huge pieces of whatever art they design. One of the artists, Shepard Fairey, did the Barack Obama print "Hope" - a disputed work that is still in the courts today.

The film shines with creative ideas of street art captured by Banksy and others. It makes for a fun time with laughs at the absurdity of filming all the action in London, New York, and L.A.

Spray-painting "I just messed up your wall" doesn't seem to serve any useful purpose. But through this, we learn that all grafitti is temporary. It is usually painted over or removed although at someone's...
