(BOULDER) Exit Through the Gift Shop is a film by Banksy who dares not reveal his face. He's a wanted man for destroying property all in the name of street art.
The film involves 5 artists that have discovered Kinko's copy shop can print huge pieces of whatever art they design. One of the artists, Shepard Fairey, did the Barack Obama print "Hope" - a disputed work that is still in the courts today.
The film shines with creative ideas of street art captured by Banksy and others. Whether the Police were real, Heaven knows. But it makes for a fun time with laughs evenly spaced throughout the film.
Some vandalism such as spray-painting "I just messed up your wall" is evident in the film. This doesn't seem to serve any useful purpose. But through this, we learn that all grafitti is temporary. It is usually painted over or removed. Some of the other works and techniques were amazingly inventive.
It is a satire that inevitably needed to be made - especially with amateur film-maker Frenchman Thierry Guetta who ran around shooting mindless video for several years. After the guy ends up filming a renegade street artist, we learn he gives up his video hobby in pursuit of creating his own street art. Guetta then goes on to sell his art in a L.A. gallery for over a million dollars much to the chagrin of the other frustrated street artists.
That's why the film is declared a disaster. As Banksy describes it, "It's basically the story of how one man set out to film the un-filmable...and failed!"
